Rin Tsuchimi (土見 稟 Tsuchimi Rin? ) is the main protagonist throughout the Shuffle! series. He attends Verbena Academy as a second year.

Background

Little is known about Rin's past. He was orphaned as a child when his father and mother are killed in a car accident. Rin was taken in by the Fuyou family soon after and started living with Kaede and her father.

He is a sophomore at Verbena National Academy, class 2-C. His grades are average; yet, he has excellent athletic ability.

Since he became a candidate for marriage to Lisianthus and Nerine, who suddenly transferred to the school in June, Mayumi gave him the nickname "a man who can be a god, a demon (demon king), or an ordinary man." The heroines who are in love with him are called "Tsuchimi Lovers." Although Rin doesn't realize it, he is also very popular among other girls, and his photos are sold at a high rate.

At house chores, Rin is quite incompetent, especially in cooking. Kaede takes care of everything around him. He also has trouble waking up in the morning, so she had to wake him up every day.

Personality

Rin values others more than himself, and because of his experience of losing his parents at a young age, he hates more than anything when people are sad or hurt. Sometimes, even willing to sacrifices himself to help those around him. He also does not like to show his weaknesses to others.

As noted by Kaede Fuyou, Rin's main virtue is kindness. The girls love him because of this. However, this also causes his greatest weakness. Later in the series, it's revealed that his indecisiveness and goal to make everyone happy only hurt them instead. Rin shows minimal initiative when dealing with girls, but he develops feelings for both Lisianthus and Nerine quickly when they arrive and spends more and more time with them.

Character Relationships

Kaede Fuyou

With regards to Kaede, he thinks of her as a childhood friend only in the anime. When people comment that they would make a good couple, Rin either waves it off or says that it is strange to think of them that way.

This bitch crazy yeet

"People like you should DIE !"

Rin's childhood friend. When they were young, Kaede's mother and Rin's parents were killed in a car accident. Kaede mistreated Rin because she thought it was his fault that her mother died, ignoring his feelings (or the fact that he lost both of his parents). She even went as far as to drop a knife in his eye.

However, in middle school, she finds out that the truth. The accidental deaths of Rin's parents and her mother were actually her faults because she told her mother to come home early because she was sick. After knowing the truth, Kaede starts being nicer to Rin, even going as far as to join the cooking club so she can start cooking for him. She acts practically like his maid. Throughout the series, it is shown that Kaede loves Rin very profoundly and is afraid that if she tells him that, it will destroy their friendship.

In the anime, Rin moves out to be independent and Kaede starts living for herself instead of him.

In "Really? Really!", Rin falls in love with Kaede and are in a relationship. After an incident involving Primula's power, Kaede enters a comatose state. He enters the memory world to wake her up. In the process, however, he has to face the traumatic past of their childhood once again.

Asa Shigure

Asa hit

Asa greeting Rin

Rin's old friend from middle school, though they met through Kaede at the cooking club. She's a year older than Rin, and in the beginning, he thinks of her as a sister. It is a running gag that she greets him every morning by slapping his arm hard. In the anime, he chooses her, and the two start dating.

During her route in the game and the anime, Asa becomes sick, similar to her illness as a child, but refuses to use her powers to save herself because she hates magic. Rin, unwilling to lose Asa, puts measures into his own hands and slits his wrists, saying he rather die than live without Asa. Seeing no other opinion, Asa finally uses her powers to save Rin's life and her own.

Nerine

In "Tick! Tack!", as the continuation of Nerine's route, Rin choices Nerine and they are lovers. However, ruining the past timeline can result in her having a different mother, leaning to her having a different personality and hair color. Therefore, he tries to correct the timeline to keep her original form.

Primula

On Primula's route, she regains emotions and speaks actively, calling Rin "onii-chan" (big brother) and calling Kaede "onee-chan" (big sister) as proof of family. Furthermore, in the updated story of "SHUFFLE! Essence +", Primula still grows emotionally, regardless of the routes.

In the aftermath of Episode 2, she also displays a rich emotional expression with a slightly mature attitude. Primula still cherishes her memory with Rin and others. She also states that Raito Aioi has a striking resemblance to Rin.

Etymology

  • The name Rin means "salary in rice" (稟).
  • Rin's surname Tsuchimi means "soil, earth" (土) (tsuchi) and "see, hopes, chances, idea, opinion, look at, visible" (見) (mi).

Trivia

  • In Shuffle! visual novel, no matter who Rin ends up with, Shin-ou reminds everyone that polygamy is legal in Shinkai. In the sequel/expansion Shuffle! Essence+ this is explicitly the basis for Kareha's ending (Rin agrees to marry both her and her sister Tsubomi) and more specifically Tsubomi's (she refuses to have a relationship with Rin unless he agrees to marry ALL the girls who are in love with him as well).
